Indonesians face court over illegal fishing
Four Indonesian fishermen who tried to escape capture by jumping into shark
infested waters last month have appeared in the Darwin Magistrates Court.
The four men were charged with using a foreign fishing boat for commercial
fishing and obstructing a commonwealth official.
The court heard their boat was spotted inside the Australian Fishing Zone and
then pursued before finally being stopped in Indonesian waters.
The men tied some floats together, threw them overboard and then jumped ship
themselves.
The court also heard the boat was fitted with a working global positioning
system.
Three of the men were placed on $4,000 good behaviour bonds for three years and
fined $2,000.
The fourth man was given a $5,000 and three-year good behaviour bond and fined
$2,000.
The boat's master is likely to be sentenced tomorrow.
