pak Ikra adalah salah seorang budayawan
yang menjadi asset bangsa kita.
saya sudah lama menjadi fans nya pak ikra sejak
saya muda; yaitu pak ikra sebagai budayawan.
Saya kira akan lebih tepat dan produktif jika
pak Ikra memfokuskan diri di dalam kegiatan
* kontemplasi * dalam ranah kebudayaan ini
dan menuangkannya di dalam tulisan-tulisan
yang bermutu tinggi untuk menjadi perenungkan
kita bersama; untuk menjadi visi bagi kemanusiaan
di masa depan. I know that you actually have
this kind of capacity.
saya menyayangkan jika orang seperti pak ikra
ikut-ikutan "terjebak" dalam perdebatan klise hitam-
putih dalam politik ke islaman saat ini. Sebagai
contoh, saya kok tidak menemukan informasi atau
wawasan yang "baru" dan "segar" dari artikel
FEER di bawah ini. Bunyinya seperti memutar-mutar
ulang kaset lama, tentang model klise *anatomi ummat
islam*, yang mengajari orang awam di dunia sana:

ummat islam di indonesia itu dapat diklasifikasikan
menjadi 2 golongan:
(A) golongan islam "moderat":

golongan islam yang moderat ini lah yang
* good guys * yang harus kita dukung.
Oleh karena itu anak-anak sekalian,
Golongan islam inilah golongan yang
"selalu benar".
(B) golongan islam "radikal":
MMI, FPI, PKS, dsb.... dsb. ...
golongan islam ini adalah golongan
yang * bad guys *, terkait dengan "al-qaida",
osama bin laden, dsb. golongan inilah
yang harus dilawan mati-matian, ...
Karena golongan islam yang ini adalah
golongan islam yang "selalu salah".
Nah camkanlah nasehat ibu gurumu ini.
ada pertanyaan anak-anak? .....

Padahal menentukan mana yang "benar" dan
mana yang "salah" itu tidak bisa menggunakan
cara "gampangan" seperti di atas.
Saya menolak, juga saya harapkan sebagian
besar ummat Islam di Indonesia menolak
untuk "ikut-ikutan" menggunakan "pisau
barat" untuk membelah ummat Islam
menjadi dua bagian secara gampangan
seperti di atas.
Saya rasa akan lebih tepat dan produktif
jika di bangung dialog di antara semua
Ummat Islam (juga ummat lainnya), tanpa
menggunakan "pisau gampangan" seperti
di atas. Saya melihat hidup ini penuh
"kompromi". Biasanya solusi yang "optimum"
baru diperoleh setelah orang menggabungkan
berbagai elemen yang ada.

engineer, you would understand that in
real life, we rarely know the "exact
solution of the problem" (for example
engineering problem). What we normally
do is using *approximation* to this
e.x.a.c.t__b.u.t__u.n.k.n.o.w.n solution.
This approximating *function* is usually
constructed using what we call "Basis
Functions", which are the "element
functions". What we do, first we usually
"identify" and choose these "basis functions",
and then "calculate" the weights for each
of them and than combine them to give our
final approcimation. This is the basic
approach used in the * Finite Element
Method (FEM) * which are widely used,
particularly in engineering.
back to the 'real life' :), I see that
the different constituents in a society
just like the above * basis functions *.
We could get an *optimum solution* for
this society of we incorporate all of
these constituents = by giving each of
them certain w.e.i.g.h.t = and than
combine them together. For example,
for Indonesia case, even if there are
some "communist" or "marxist" elements,
I would suggest that we should not ignore
them. They are also entitled to be taken into
account.
If everybody agrees with this view, then
the crucial steps is how to determine or
"distribute" the "weight" for every constituent,
and this is where what we call * politics *
come into play

saya melihat, cara pandang seperti di atas
merupakan cara pandang yang "gampangan" dan
dan sudah sering di "putar-putar" ulang

oleh FEER di bawah ini merupakan informasi

Kita juga tahu kultur Hongkong ini seperti
apa. Similar to Singaporean, they represent
the most 'capitalist' and richest chinese
community in eastern Asia Pacific rim.
They usually view the 'nations' other than
Hongkong (and probably Singapore) as
"inferior" nation. It is well known that
FEER has been always critical to the
"backward" nations in the Pacific Rim,
but they are rarely critical to the
west.
Am I racist? no, I don't think so.
Because I have deep simphaty and
(sometime) a kind of cultural admiration
toward the chinese in the Mainland,
particularly those who are still as poor
as the average of us. But I have some resentment
to those who live in Singapore and Hongkong,
who tend to look "down" to the others in the
Eastern Pacific Rim, incuding us, the "Melayu
nations".
Islam also has very early cultural contact
with one of the ancient Chinese dinasty,
as early as 700 M ( in the era of Utsman
ibn Affan, the 4th khalifah after the death
of the prophet ).
Sometime I have a feeling that
FEER has been trying to appear
"very western", sometimes even
more western than the "true western"
themselves. I find that western
(US) magazines such as TIME or
Newsweek are culturally more
balance than FEER.

with pak Hidayat Nur Wahid himself, I believe
you would get at least a 'different angle' in
looking into this problem.
