Govt Urged To Seriously Settle Nurmiati's Case In Saudi Arabia
Jakarta ( Berita ) : The government has been urged to seriously settle the
tragedy fate of Nurmiati, an Indonesian domestic helper hailing from West
Nusatenggara province, who had been tortured by her employer in Saudi
Arabia, and later put in jail for dropping her charges.
According to a joint statement signed here Tuesday by her husband Muksin,
Jorok Village Head Wahyudin, director of the Migrant Workers Empowerment
and Defence Alliance (AP2BMI) Guril Lizan, and the director of Migrant Care
Anis Hidayah, the government has not taken any measures in the settlement
of Nurmiati's case.
While Nurmiati had served Fahd Al Doseri and his family for 22 months, her
employer has not sent her wages to her family in West Nusatenggara.
Nurmiati's family had to borrow money from a private lender to pay Rp17
million in the cost of her overseas employement.
The manpower and transmigration ministry's pledge to immediately summon the
management of PT Rahana Karindo Utama which had sent her for overseas,
turned out to be an empty promise.
Responding to this hopeless condition, Nurmiati's family, the Jorok village
head, and the non-governmental organization Migrant Care, had asked the
foreign ministry to take more concrete steps by recalling the Indonesian
ambassador to Saudi Arabia for an explanation on the measures which may
already have been taken to settle Nurmiati's case.
They have also asked the manwpower and transmigration ministry to urge PT
Rahana Karinto Utama to show their sense of responsibility in the case.
The Indonesian embassy in Saudi Arabia was also urged to persuade the Saudi
government to free Nurmiati from all kinds of legal suits and to demand her
employer to pay all her outstanding wages.
Furthermore, they also insisted the Indonesian government on sending
Nurmiati back to her hometown. (ant)
