TASAWUF & SUFISM
by WarriorEtte, Sydney Australia
http://warriorette.blogspot.com

A few years back, I asked my dad:"Dad where and what
is Tasawwuf?"
He replies "(child) I am not worthy of speaking about
it, so ask those whom apply it to their lives"

So I asked someone who was learned they said:

"Tasawwuf is Ehsan, Tasawwuf is Mysticism and Tasawwuf
is Tawwakul"

They continued on with their fancy vocabulary, but I
just wanted an answer not a lesson on Arabic words.

So on with my search for this mysterious subject
called Tasawwuf!

I lifted every rock and shouted "Tasawwuf are you
there?"

Have you ever stared at something so hard that your
eyes went out of focus?
It appeared the harder I looked the more confused I
got.

Honestly, it is a very difficult subject, unlike other
sciences. It's not taught to a class by a teacher on a
chalk board. Nor can it be memorised like a book. Not
to mention there is not one method of practicing it.

So I investigated more, and read and pondered and read
more.

I looked at all the rubbish people where writing in
the name of Sufism and Tasawwuf, Strange brotherhoods
with no legitimate Tariqa connection and cult
movements were calling them selves a Tariqa! It was
like I picked up a fragile ornament and was trying to
dust all the dirt of it, I had to be very careful one
hard hit and it would smash to pieces, and all my
efforts would go to waste.

The wikipedia definition for Sufism\Tasawwuf:

Sufism (Arabic Tasawwuf) is a system of esoteric
philosophy associated with Islam. In modern language
it might also be referred to as "Islamic spirituality"
or "Islamic mysticism".
The word Sufi has its origin in Tasawwuf. The root
word of Tasawwuf is the Arabic word Saaf, meaning
pure, clean or blank. So the word Tasawwuf means
purifying or making clean. A Sufi is a person who
practices purification of heart.

Yes, that's an answer. A definition, But anyone can
give a definition.

Are they going to start defining love too?

So someone asked me the other day, where do I find it
how do I do it?

Oh! If only it was that easy.

I scratched my head in distress; you can't find
Tasawwuf in books or on the internet, Tasawwuf is a
fragile science that can't be explained with one word
or one paragraph.

Just before I joined my Tariqa I asked one of the
mureeds

"How do I know this Tariqa is right for me?"

The mureed replied:

"You don't pick your Tariqa, the Tariqa picks you"

When I heard this, I knew that this was the correct
path for me and I did not hesitate, I did not have any
doubts about it.

The worldly life has changed from those of many famous
Sufis (Shaykh Abd-Qadir Jilani, Mowlana Jallaluddin
Rumi, Hasan al-Basri, Ibn-Arabi, Al-Ghazzali etc)

Whilst reading Kashful Mahjub I read a fascinating
section on dervish hood, and this is my very short
summary on it. From reading this book it's fair to say
that asceticism and dervish hood (faqir) is
exceptionally difficult to achieve in this day and
age. Faqir can be literally translated as poverty,
however in Sufi terminology it means to be rich with
God because he lives on spiritual wealth and abundance
not physical (Istighna) in English this is known as
asceticism, a person who lives like a faqir, lives his
life with complete trust in Allah (Tawakkul) and non
dependant on anything else.

If you see my early post on 11 Qualities, I guess this
is almost like the Dog and Owner's relationship as
Sayyid Shaykh Abdul Qadir Jilani (RA) put it, Strange
analogy, but also very valid. But in Islam
asceticism\renunciation of the world is purely mental
and spiritual not physical, my understanding of it is
that they need not to sit in seclusion for good, but
go about their daily life earning a livelihood and
going about its dealings.

Living each day with absolute and complete trust in
Allah and admitting it is through him alone they are
given bread, not their own efforts. Men are physical
beings after all it's impossible for them to escape
the physical world, unlike ascetics from other
religions who sit in seclusion for good, and do not
want to face the world's anxieties and duties.

So people continue to ask show me how to become a Sufi
(dervish)?
So can this renunciation or Tawakkul be taught?

But tell me how can you teach someone how to love?

We have hundreds of prominent scholars trying to
enlighten us on this beautiful science, however they
have not succeed in my eyes. For Tasawwuf can only be
taught by a true dervish, and is not like any other
subject.

It's a mercy from Allah that I am able to call myself
a Student of Shaykh Nazim who lives like a true
Dervish\Sufi and I am spiritually connected to him
through the Naqshbandi Tariqa. Because it is through
his devout love and trust in Allah I maybe just one
day able to understand the real meaning of Tasawwuf.
