Winner in Danish Boycott: Newspapers
Hasan Hatrash, Arab News
JEDDAH, 2 February 2006 - Saudi newspapers seem to be the only winners in
controversy over blasphemous cartoons first published in Denmark in September
and since reprinted in other dailies.
Local newspapers have been receiving a windfall of advertisements in
recent days taken out by local advertisement agencies clarifying their clients'
support of the boycott, or denying their relationship to the Nordic country.
Kuwaiti Danish Dairy Company (KDDC), which has a strong presence in the
Saudi market, asked people yesterday in a local paper to "Relax" in an advert
taken out in Al-Riyadh newspaper. The Kuwaiti company claims in the advert that
they are 100 percent Kuwaiti, that it packages many of its products in Saudi
Arabia and imports the mangoes for their juice from India.
The massive advertisement campaigns were held after the boycott began
last month as a reaction toward the blasphemous cartoons published in
Jyllands-Posten.
It has become common during the last couple of weeks to see big
advertisements in every paper with flashy fonts essentially saying: "We are not
a Danish product."
Arab News carried an advertisement yesterday of Anchor milk saying
simply: "Pure goodness only from New Zealand." The word "New Zealand" is in
bold.
Earlier this week, Saudi Arabian Dairy and Foodstuff Co. (SADAFCO)
published a clarification letter in Saudi newspapers about the termination of
their Danish co-founders since 1987.
On the same day that the financially bankrupt French daily owned by a
French-Egyptian businessman, France Soir, re-published the cartoons, the Saudi
operations of the French-owned international hypermarket chain Carrefour stated
that the company has stopped importing Danish products and has removed the
existing ones from its shelves. The advert declared that any customers finding
any Danish product in their chain of supermarkets should report it to the
management for removal.
It is unknown if Carrefour will now remove French and German products now
that newspapers in those countries have published the cartoons.
Al-Othaim chain of supermarkets, also published a full page advert in a
local newspaper about their latest products. In the lower part of the page
there was a sign saying "No for Danish products."
