      Former Indonesian president, Abdurrahman Wahid

INDONESIA: YUDHOYONO FIGHTING CORRUPTION FOR POLITICAL ENDS, SAYS
EX-PRESIDENT

Jakarata, 7 March (AKI) - Abdurrahman Wahid, the former Indonesian president
and respected moderate Islamic leader, has accused current president Susilo
Bambang Yudhoyono of using the country's fight against corruption as a
political tool for attacking his adversaries. "The most blatant example is the
arrest of former minister for Religious Affairs Syed Agil Hussein Al Munawar.
He was arrested but the real target is Taufik, husband of former president
Megawati Sukarnoputri," Wahid said in an interview with Adnkronos International
(AKI).

Syed Agil Hussein Al Munawar was sentenced to five years in prison in February
for having embezzled the funds that were set aside by the government for the
Haj, a journey to the Muslim holy cities of Mecca and Medina that every healthy
Muslim must make at least once in their lives, so long as they can afford it.

The former minister, who worked under the administration of former president
Megawati, was also fined 200 million rupiah or about 18,000 euros.

The sentence was well received in Jakarta where president Yudhoyono is involved
in a fight against corruption which is present in all sectors of Indonesian
society.

Despite this, Wahid has compared the arrest to a political manouver.

"The arrest has a political overtone. If you arrest the [former] minister, you
will soon have the basis to go after Megawati's husband," Wahid told AKI.

"The real target is him [Taufik, Megawati's husband]. He [Al Munawar] was
virtually appointed by Taufik, they are from the same province, and they do
everything together," said Wahid.

There is a widely held view in Jakarata, that Taufik - a millionaire
buisnessman and parliamentarian with the Indonesian Democratic Party of
Struggle (PDI-P) - influenced many important decisions made by his wife, former
president Megawati Sukarnoputri, who founded the PDI-P.

Wahid also strongly criticised Yudhonoyo's general progress in the fight
against corruption.

"In short, the fight against graft is the government's biggest failure to
date," said Wahid. "You cannot fight corruption and then invite some of the
guilty people at the presidential palace," he said, referring to the visit made
four bankers to Yudhoyono at the presidential palace on 13 February.

The four were implcated in a massive corruption case that led to the
disappearance of almost 84 billion rupiah in the 1990s. The funds were used by
national bank of Indonesia to save some local banks in difficulty during the
east Asian crisis in 1997. After the discovery of the fraud, some of the
bankers implicated were arrested while others escaped abroad.

The unscheduled visit by the bankers was seen in Jakarta as a possible sign
that the government is willing to reach a compromise with them. Some analysts
have also mentioned the possibility that the government could offer them a
reduced sentence or amnesty, in exchange for a return of the capital.

Wahid has rejected the possibility of a compromise.

"There is nothing to compromise with those people. All you have to do is put
them behind bars, said Wahid.

The struggle against corruption has always been the top priority for Yudhoyono,
who was elected 16 months ago.

Up until now, the president's crusade had resulted in the arrest of various
governors and local parliamentarians as well as many who were previously seen
as untouchable by the law.

Among those arrested are Rahardi Ramelan, the former minister of commerce and
industry, Probosutedjo, and important businessman and half-brother of the
former dictator Suharto, Syafruddin Temenggung, the former director of the
agency responsible for restructuring bank apparatus and Eddie Neloe, the former
executive director of the Mandiri bank, the largest Inodnesian private bank.

Neloe was recently acquitted but an anti-corruption team put together by
Yudhoyono announced the intention to fight these findings in an appeal.

Experts say that in any case, the arrests only scratch the surface of the
problem which is much deeper in Indonesia. According to Transparency
International, the international watchdog against corrutption, Indonesia is
still the sixth most corrupt nation in the world and the most corrupt in Asia.
