Women outnumber men by nearly 300,000 in Hong Kong Hong Kong (ANTARA News) - Women outnumber men in Hong Kong by nearly 10 to nine because of an influx of foreign maids and Chinese wives and girlfriends, according to a government report Friday. The former British colony last year had nearly 300,000 more women than men as residents with a total population including migrant workers of 3.6 million women and 3.33 million men, the report found. In 1996, there were 1,001 men for every 1,000 women in Hong Kong but last year there were only 921 men for every 1,000 women, according to the report. Women are outnumbering men because of an influx of more than 200,000 foreign domestic helpers mainly from the Philippines, Indonesia and Thailand and women from China following the easing of cross-border travel restrictions, the report concluded. Nature appears to be trying in vain to redress the balance with 29,880 boys born in 2005 compared to 27,218 girls, according to the report from the former British colony's Census and Statistics department. However, the increased number of baby boys is unlikely to have an impact as Hong Kong's birth rate is one of the world's lowest with women having an average of only 0.9 children each. Today's Hong Kong women are less likely to marry with the number of unmarried women rising by 47 per cent in the past 20 years while the number of single mothers has doubled since the early 1990s< DPA reported. There has also been a sharp rise in the number of women choosing to live alone with 127,000 recorded last year, 119 per cent more than in 1986. Hong Kong's sex imbalance is the reverse scenario to neighbouring mainland China where men outnumber women in many provinces because of the one-child policy and the widespread use of ultra-sound scan technology for sex-selective abortions.
