Indonesia says Israel has no right to reject troops from Indonesia

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesia said Monday Israel has no right to reject
U.N. peacekeepers being sent to Lebanon from countries, which have no
diplomatic relations with the Jewish state.

Indonesia has committed to send up to 1,000 troops to join a 15,000-strong U.N.
peacekeeping force in Lebanon.

Along with Bangladesh and Malaysia, it is among the only countries to have
offered mechanized infantry battalions, which will be front-line troops.

They are to expand a force to help enforce a truce along the Lebanese border,
which ended 34 days of fighting between Israel and the Lebanese guerrilla group
Hezbollah.

Europe, which had been expected to lead the force, has been reluctant to offer
more troops to balance the presence of those from Muslim countries.

On Sunday, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said countries, which do not have
diplomatic ties with Israel should not participate in the international
peacekeeping force. Bangladesh, Indonesia and Malaysia have no diplomatic
relations with Israel.

"Resolution No. 1701 is binding to every U.N. member, stipulating no nation can
veto the participation of any countries," Foreign Minister Spokesman Desra
Percaya was quoted by Kyodo as saying.

"The deployment of the troops is for the Lebanese side, not in the Israeli
territory, so we don't need Israel's acceptance," he added.

''Their concerns and refusal is unimaginable.''

On Friday, Indonesian Defense Minister Juwono Sudarsono said the government
does not want its troops to disarm either Hezbollah or Israeli forces in the
southern Lebanon.

"We don't want to be assigned to disarm Hezbollah because that would be
sensitive," Sudarsono reportedly said.

According to him, there will be a backlash from hardline Islamic groups and
Islamic-based political parties if Indonesian peacekeepers are involved in
disarming Hezbollah.

The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon currently consists of close to
2,000 troops. (*)
