Typhoon makes landfall in Aomori Pref., approaches Hokkaido TOKYO, Aug. 4 KYODO* Typhoon Usagi approached Japan's northernmost main island of Hokkaido on Saturday afternoon after making landfall on the Tsugaru Peninsula in Aomori Prefecture, causing heavy rain in the Tohoku region, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. The agency said continued caution is necessary in connection with the typhoon as it is expected to move in the Pacific coastal area of Hokkaido, bringing heavy rain to northern Japan. As of 1 p.m., the typhoon was around the Tsugaru Peninsula, moving east-northeast at a speed of about 40 kilometers per hour, according to the agency. It was packing winds of up to 90 kph with an atmospheric pressure of 996 hectopascals near its center.
