Germany's BMW and Daimler to boost technical cooperation
Top German luxury automakers BMW and Daimler are to step up their technical
cooperation, the German-language edition of the Financial Times (FTD) said
Thursday.
Talks between BMW and Daimler do not focus only on cooperating on constructing
engines for smaller vehicles but center also on the joint use and development
of larger auto parts, including gear boxes, steering systems and axes.
BMW made headlines last week, announcing plans to cut some 8,000 jobs next year
aimed at restoring profits.
The slashing of thousands of jobs at the Munich-based carmaker will primarily
affect temporary workers in Germany.
As part of the downsizing measures, all BMW workers who are due to retire in
the near future, won't be replaced.
Other BMW employees will be enticed to accept lucrative severance payments.
The latest company move by BMW boss Norbert Reithofer is geared at raising once
again profitability.
Meanwhile, BMW is planning to hike annual productivity at its plants by five to
10 percent.
While the company is cutting thousands of jobs in Germany, it plans to hire
additional workers at its auto plants in the US and China.
Around 107,000 people are employed by BMW in some 150 countries.
