*Existence of ice confirmed around young star* Feb. 18 *TOKYO, Japan* The photo shows a disc of space dust and gases surrounding a young star observed through the Subaru Telescope operated by the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan on Hawaii Island. A group of researchers including those at the observatory announced on Feb. 17 what it says is the world's first confirmation of the existence of ice on the surface of the disc by observation. The space ice could end up as sea water after the space dust forms into a planet, the researchers said. The star itself is not seen in the photo due to a special device on the telescope.
