Simamora , The Jakarta Post , Jakarta | Mon, 06/08/2009 8:24 PM | National Christian communities raised concern over problems in getting permits to build churches during the meeting with presidential hopeful Jusuf Kalla and running mate Wiranto on Monday. Kalla and Wiranto visited the Communion of Indonesian Churches (PGI) Monday ahead of the July 8 presidential election. "We remind (JK-Wiranto) that the freedom of religion is guaranteed under the 1945 Constitutional. The upcoming government must uphold basic rights of people and protect freedom of religion," PGI chairman AA Yewangoe said. He also raised the recent closer of the Huria Kristen Batak Protestant (HKBP) church in Depok. In his speech, Kalla agreed that the country must respect freedom of the religion in the country. "I admit there are still problems (in building permits), but we have made some improvements in recent years. There are also more churches built this year," he said. Presidential candidate Megawati Soekarnoputri and running mate Prabowo was also slated to visit the PGI on Tuesday. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
