Nobody Seems to Really Know Who is Yulianto? Does he even exist? Ary Muladi once claimed to have given Rp 5.15 billion ($545,900) to a certain Yulianto, who was then supposed to have given the money to members of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) on behalf of fugitive graft suspect Anggoro Widjojo. Yulianto seems to be the missing link in the scandal that has gripped the nation. Ary initially said he personally handed the money to KPK commissioners. But he later retracted that claim. On Saturday he said he handed it to a person going by the name Yulianto. So far, no one has been able to confirm Yulianto's identity, or even his existence. In Solo, Central Java, a man named Yulianto Wibowo Kusumo has emerged to deny he is that Yulianto. But he's not just any Yulianto. He is the brother-in-law of Comr. Gen. Susno Duadji, the National Police's former chief detective at the center of the scandal. Still, he does not fit the description Ary provided of his Yulianto. Susno's brother-in-law, a prominent businessman in Solo, wears glasses, is 167-centimeter tall and has short hair. In contrast, Ary's Yulianto is 185-cm tall, bald and doesn't wear glasses. "Maybe it is because I am Susno's brother-in-law, then the press tried to make a connection. But I clarify, once again, I do not know Ary Muladi and the KPK [commissioners]," Yulianto said on Monday. So if he's not Ary's Yulianto, who is? That's what journalists and many others in Surabaya are trying to find out. Ary said he met Yulianto in Surabaya, where the latter had a house in an elite residential complex called Dharmahusada. A search of residential records revealed 18 names that could be the mysterious figure. A Surabaya lawyer, however, may have provided a strong lead. Henry Rudijanto, head of the East Java Legal Advisers Association, said one of his members once knew the Yulianto described by Ary. "Once Ary described Yulianto, the member remembered his/her former client in around 1997," Henry said. He added that at the time, his Yulianto, who lived in the Wisma Permai area, near Dharmahusada, was involved in a land dispute at the Surabaya District Court. "At the time, Yulianto was found guilty, but he was not punished, as he is a nephew of a minister of the New Order era," Henry said. This particular Yulianto then disappeared and resurfaced in 2005, when he asked his former lawyer to join his business in Jakarta. Henry said he does not know anything about what happened next.
