National Police Leaders Donate Cows For Idul Adha Sacrifice, One With Bonus
Worms

The slaughtering of animals donated by Indonesian National Police officials
began on Friday afternoon in South Jakarta to mark the Islamic Idul Adha
holiday.

Three cows from the National Police chief and deputy chief were the first to be
slaughtered. The process went smoothly, and the animals were skinned and
gutted by 25 butchers.

However, when the meat was cut into portions, officers from South Jakarta's
agriculture office took the liver of one of the cows away because it was
infected by liver worms and was unsafe for consumption.

"The liver of the third cow was not suitable for consumption because it
contained worms," a farm officer named Kurnia told detik.com.

Kurnia, who was assisted by two students from the veterinary faculty at the
Bogor Agricultural Institute, found that the worms were still alive.

"When we cut up the liver, the worms were still alive and squirming. The liver
is not safe for consumption but the rest of the meat is," she said.

The liver worm infection, according to Kurnia, could only be detected by
directly looking at the liver because a week ago the cows were inspected and
labeled as healthy.

"A week before they were slaughtered, we had conducted an inspection and these
animals were pronounced healthy," Kurnia said.

Idul Adha is the Islamic Day of Sacrifice, and traditionally, those who are
wealthy donate animals to be slaughtered and the meat is donated to the poor.
