This is definitely safe from a JMM perspective, as we cannot possibly
_consume_ this pointer until we are executing a command submitted after the
CommandStore is constructed. We only use the `current` pointer in a later
`execute` method, and only from this specific `Thread` (by definition). We do
not actually use the pointer until it is safely published via a pair of
volatile writes and reads.
