I would like to share some helpful information with you on healthy
eating.

I know you have heard it all before, but healthy eating is a very
important part of your life. What we put in our bodies has an effect on
how we feel on the inside and even on how we look on the outside. It is
important to know what you should be eating every day and what you
should not eat. And then you should strive to change your eating habits.

It is a fact that what we eat has an effect on how our body feels and
how it performs. Personally, I want to feel and perform at my best and I
bet you feel the same way. Excluding certain food groups is a bad idea,
because each and every group gives your body different vitamins and
nutrients it needs. Excluding all fats is just as bad as excluding all
vegetables.

According to the Food and Drug Administration's food pyramid, there are
six major food groups:

-Fats, oils, and sweets: these foods like butter and candy should be
used sparingly.

-Dairy: milk, yogurt, and cheese are important for calcium and other
nutrients and 2-3 servings should be consumed per day. 1 serving = 8 oz.
of milk or a domino size portion of cheese.

-Meat, poultry, fish, beans: this group is important because of protein.
However many of these items can be high in fat so it is good to eat 2-3
servings. 1 serving of meat = 1 deck of cards (3 oz.).

-Vegetables: broccoli, carrots, asparagus, etc. offer many vitamins and
nutrients. You should eat 3-5 servings.

-Fruits: apples, oranges, blueberries, etc. provide nutrients and
antioxidants. You should aim for 2-4 servings.

-Grains: bread, cereal, rice, and pasta are important. Fiber is a
particularly important ingredient in grains. You should get 6-11
servings every day. 1 serving = 1 slice of bread.

It is important for you to figure out what a serving is. You might be
surprised by how different your perception of a serving is. Moderation
is the key to healthy eating. You might have to do a little research to
see how much a serving is of the foods you are eating. A good place to
start is by looking at the label.

I encourage you to start making changes today to your eating habits.
Changes you make today are changes you will see in your attitude about
yourself and your relationship with food in the future. I promise you
will like the changes you see.
