Pay close attention to which Intel chips were mentioned--the Itanium. It's
the $4k/pop server chip. For many tasks, it's very unimpressive, but for
single threaded FP, it's a monster.
According to the benchmarks I've seen, Itanium also does extremely well in large scale database servers, and it seems to have very good large scale multiprocessor performance. Its mostly targetted at enterprise class servers, against things such as Sun's UltraSparc.
