About testing 1 exponent on N CPUs vs testing N exponents on 1 CPU each, a goal is to be able to use large and powerful UNIX computers with plenty of (sometimes) unused processors. If big companies providing HPC (High Performance Computing) machines become interested in running such programs on their machine, this will highlight the GIMPS project. Also, GLucas program helped to find 2 problems: - a hang in threads due to NPTL (see: http://nptl.bullopensource.org) - some mistake a recent Intel compiler does. Also I enjoyed trying to make GLucas running so fast !
