Is a 3GHz P4 supposed to be this hot? Is it bad for the machine?

Yes, and yes. I have found that without additional CPU case fans, a fully-laden CPU (as with Prime95) gets too hot for JUST the power supply fan to circulate enough air. You need additional case fans... or you need to run with the case OPEN (side panel off) to allow the hot air that the CPU fan is pulling away to dissipate.

WARNING: Running with the case off lets a LOT more dust in. My 3.2 Ghz P4 runs like that... and JUST tonight I started getting overheat beeps. A closer inspection showed that DUST had clogged the heatsink near the fan, and therefore the fan was not properly cooling. This was over about 5 months of operation. Clearing the dust with a can of compressed air reduced the machine temperature by about 10 degrees Celsius. Check your CPU fan frequently (whether you run case off or not).

Use your CMOS features to monitor your in-case temperature and your CPU temp. CPU temp of a 3.2 GHz P4 ought not exceed about 55C when running Prime95, and case temperature should be well below 40C. My dust-laden fan had my CPU pushing 63C, which caused the beeping.

Good luck!

Jeff
