After reading that last post, I shut down Prime95 on my machine, and
guess what? The lights in my room got a little brighter!

Most likely psychological - if you stop looking at a monitor the other lights
tend to look brighter. You could try turning down the brightness control - at
the risk of having your digital photo prints coming out wrong if you use the
same monitor for adjusting lightness / contrast / colour balance etc.

If your lights really did brighten when you stopped Prime95, there is
something seriously wrong with your house wiring or utility supply. Get it
fixed before it kills you.

Lucky you. Here in the UK we haven't seen $2.30/gal for decades. Greedy
government!

It was all in jest, guys--lighten up, OK? No, I haven't noticed any difference in the brightness of my lights depending on whether or not I'm running Prime95! I *know* that we in US have had it WAAAAAY too easy in the gasoline price context. I also *knew* that most of our electricity comes from yukky sulfur-laden coal, and not oil. The auto companies here have a lot of power, and with the dumb way we've built our metropolitan areas, many folks live 25+ miles from where they work,  so we *must* all drive cars and have no decent public transportation (with a few noteable exceptions--Chicago, Toronto, e.g.). Plus, the SUV (Sport Utility Vehicle, for those still living in the 80s) which is the largest segment of auto sales these days, is able to bypass the federal CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) standards, because they're technically categorized as TRUCKS,  not CARS, so they get a relaxed mileage requirement.

Sorry for being so off-topic!
