Subscriber private is no safeguard since any potential spammer can trivially subscribe. The archives do have a value; I think we should consider carefully the consequences of closing access to them. Personally I find spam irritating but it's easy enough to mentally filter out anything which does get past my automatic filters. Thankfully most spams are small enough that bandwidth hijacking is not much of an issue.
