Is it just me, or are the ongoing issues with the mersenne.org server
frustrating others too?
I'm almost considering giving up on GIMPS because of the connectivity
problems. I currently have 23 instances of prime95 running on various machines
scattered around the planet, the majority of which run linux. Because the
server is unreachable so often, I have to check all those instances almost
daily to see if they haven't stalled, and that is beginning to annoy me too
much. My current rank is 165, so I wonder what folks higher up the ranks do to
keep their farms running smoothly.
I understand from posts on the forums that this is partially a problem in the
client software, which I would love to see fixed. But is there anything we can
do to make the server more reliable? I happen to be a professional perl
programmer doing mostly web applications, and am rather puzzled by the
fragility of the primenet server. Surely there are many knowledgeable people
among us who could offer our assistance in improving the server side of GIMPS.
Any thoughts?
