Set checkins to 7 days. Keep a large queue of work.

There are 3 people who monitor the server: GW, SK and me. When it goes
down we try to restart the process as quickly as possible, but
sometimes it goes a few hours before we see it. There is no easy
solution to the problem as of right now. The best course of action is
to become a little less reliant on the server. Fortunately, Prime95
and mprime are designed so this is possible.

When I had the client to check in every day I used to have to deal
with hung boxes every day. Since I've switched to 7 days I haven't had
even one hang.

At the extreme, I have one box that never connects until it finishes
an exponent. I feed it manually from TPR's "orphanage". I give it 4-5
months of work at a time. It is at a remote location so I have no
access to it except when I drive out to look at it. That box hasn't
gone down at all.

Here is an example of the relevant lines in prime.ini:

DaysBetweenCheckins=7
DaysOfWork=180
DialUp=0
ManualComm=0
MaxExponents=999
NoMoreWork=1
UnreserveDays=999
UsePrimenet=1

What I love most about this project is how I can accomplish *anything*
I want with the client.

Please have patience with the server. GW and SK are very aware of the
situation and have done everything possible to make it work as
smoothly as possible. I know it appears as if the server is a
neglected box in a dark closet somewhere, but rest assured a lot of
work and effort is being applied to it daily.
