A single instance of Prime95 on one of our Opteron 270 (2.0GHz dual-core)

Your benchmarks are very similar to what I get from x2 3800. The 512K FFT figure is 0.4 seconds slower while the 4096 FFT is some 12 seconds slower.

I don't think losing 33% of Prime95 performance is something that would change my
buying decisions.

I agree with you on this point. It does influence me and with opinion being nearly balanced each way, it does loom larger.

I did decide not to go with the Athlon, however. The system seemed like an amazing deal until I started to investigate more. The motherboard is old and appears to be 'no name,' the RAM slower, the case no space to mount the drives for which there are SATA and ATA connectors. I *hate* the case. Particularly irksome is the documentation. It's a large perfect-bound book, but I was disappointed to find it more of a Windows tutorial. I realise 90% of users won't ever need to know what speed and type of memory is used, but if they think I'm going to pay them to put in more RAM because they don't tell me what kind is needed, they've got another thing coming. In many ways it's built for the type of user who will never change any hardware or reinstall Windows. That's not me.

So I realised the type of computer I want isn't as inexpensive as I initially thought. Instead, I bit the bullet and decided on a Dell XPS 600 with a Pentium D 940. It was on sale for some $600 off, sweetening the deal. It's a heck of a lot more expensive, but I'll be glad for it in the long run.

I appreciate all your comments...

Rick.
