That last comment is quite uncalled for; it's a serious insult to a major contributor to the project and I would hope that it is rapidly and unconditionally retracted. I may disagree with Ernst over the relative values of mail lists and forums but I unreservedly accept his right to his opinion. The discussion on this list seems to indicate an entrenched position amongst a majority of the responders that the list is still valued, even if it is usually silent. My reading of the position is that both list and forum should remain open for people to subscribe into or otherwise as they wish.
