THE WEEKEND PRIMETIME NEWSLETTER
Friday April 5th- Sunday April 7th, 2002
HIGHLIGHTS
"In my mind, if the next attack from Al-Qaeda is on American soil, my guess is that
George W. Bush or any other political leader of this magnitude would be a very
appealing target for a political and religious activist who wanted to hit at the very
symbol of power of the West."
Mark Juergensmeyer
Author, "Terror in the Mind of God"
This Sunday at 10pm ET tune in for MSNBC INVESTIGATES: ASSASSIN'S WORK. We'll take
you inside the very dark world of political assassinations. These killings are a
subtle tool that, at times, have been very effective, particularly in the Middle East.
But who actually sanctions their use? How have they changed the course of events?
And is there any effective defense against them? We take you inside the plot-making,
to the moment when the assassin hits his target. In a world where instability is
increasingly the norm, and victory by any means the rule, the assassin's work could
become an increasingly popular political instrument.
Also on Sunday, at 8pm ET, we bring you NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC EXPLORER. This premiere
two-hour program contains three exciting new segments: Night of the Jackal, Rat Wars
and Strike of the Scorpion. If these guys give you the creeps... we dare you to tune
in! And if they don't.. you HAVE to check this story about the largest insect ever
found in California.: http://www.msnbc.com/news/734594.asp
And here's a question for you: What's the easiest way to get caught when hiring a
hitman?
#3 Contract the "hit" from jail
#2 Hire a cop to do your dirty work
And the #1 easiest way to get caught when hiring a hitman?:
Ask the guy you've solicited (who, by the way, is an undercover cop) for proof of the
"hit"... maybe a photo or two for your scrapbook?
If you're the kind who likes to see amateur assassins, unsuspecting crooked cops, and
careless murderers CAPTURED ON CAMERA, you should probably plan to order take-out
Saturday night. From 8pm ET until well into the wee-hours you can witness for
yourself some of the most shocking and horrifying scenes ever caught on tape-- from
the pharmacist who tries to hire someone to kill his wife to the police officer who
completely loses it on the job. It's all Saturday night, beginning at 8pm ET.
Now, for some more details about what's on MSNBC this weekend:

Brian sits down for an exclusive, in-depth interview, which is the centerpiece of a
special one-hour look at the career of this Secretary of Defense. Donald Rumsfeld is
the Bush administration's public face and voice of this war on terrorism. His
Pentagon briefings have made him one of the most closely watched figures of our time.
It is the latest role in a career that has spanned more than 40 years, and has
included service to four presidents.
10PM ET
HEADLINERS & LEGENDS: SADDAM HUSSEIN
SATURDAY, APRIL 6
7-9PM ET
NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC EXPLORER: WILD ENCOUNTERS
This thriller captures nature's top predators trying to survive on an increasingly
crowded planet. Now more than ever before, open spaces are filling up as human
populations expand into once remote habitats. Homes built on rattler dens, farmers
trampled by elephants, gators found swimming in suburban pools-- these events are
occurring with alarming frequency.
9PM ET
MSNBC INVESTIGATES: CAPTURED: COPS CAUGHT ON TAPE
>From unbelievable acts of violence, to incredible acts of heroism. From everyday
>verbal abuse, to an officer's abuse of power-- we catch it all on camera. This
>disturbing documentary looks at the real lives of cops. The relatively new use of
>videocameras in patrol cars not only helps protect the police from false accusations,
>but it catches the unbelievably brazen acts of officers who know they are being
>taped! We warn you in advance, some of the video in this hour is disturbing.
10PM ET
MSNBC INVESTIGATES: CAPTURED: EYEWITNESS TO MURDER
This is one of the most horrifying crimes we've investigated, and the entire act plays
out on tape. In this one-hour documentary we detail the case of a night club owner,
who is relaxing at home with some friends in the early morning, after a night out.
With no warning, two masked gunmen burst into the home and beat and torture the three
people they find inside. All of them are executed at point blank range. The entire
crime is caught by the security camera that has recently been installed in the home.
It eventually helps to identify the killers and put them behind bars. It is likely
the closest many viewers will get to seeing a real murder take place and it is
horrifying. However, it illustrates what prosecutors say is an increasing trend.
Again, we warn you in advance, the contents of this program are disturbing.
11PM ET
MSNBC INVESTIGATES: CAPTURED: THE HITMAN TAPES
Murder for hire. You might be surprised to see just how often it occurs. And we're
not talking about mobsters involved in organized crime. The people plotting these
crimes are average Americans... a pharmacist, a community leader, a housewife, even a
preacher-- all making cold-blooded, calculated decisions to have someone killed.
You'll see how each of these cases unfolds, because the plots have all been caught on
tape.
12AM ET
MSNBC INVESTIGATES: MURDER FOR HIRE
In this second installment of one of our favorites (and yours) we show you what could
easily be auditions for the amateur hour in the murder-for-hire business. You'll meet
people who defy all common sense to find someone to do a job they can't bring
themselves to do. What is captured on camera may seem unbelievably foolish, but there
is no doubt, these attempts to hire hitmen are real, and the officers investigating
each case take them very seriously.
SUNDAY APRIL 7
8-10PM ET
NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC EXPLORER: NIGHT OF THE JACKAL, RAT WARS, STRIKE OF THE SCORPION.
This show is right up your alley of you like creepy-crawly things. We begin with
"Night of the Jackal," and a fight to keep these scavengers away from farmers, and
more importantly, their farm animals. Then we follow the people who actually look
after their city's rat population, in "Rat Wars." But, you'll see, not all the rats
are so well-loved. And last, we bring you "Strike of the Scorpion." With a sting a
thousand times more potent than cyanide, the Cetruroides scorpion of Mexico can easily
win any battle. See how researchers race to test antidotes and a potential vaccine
before more people die from its deadly strike.
10PM ET
MSNBC INVESTIGATES: ASSASSIN'S WORK
>From Sadat, to Rabin to Massoud... this hour takes a look at some of the most
>high-profile assassinations in political history. And we tackle the big question:
>who's next? We go behind the plots to find out how assassinations are effectively
>used as a tool of some governments. This is a terrific hour of television if you're
>looking to try to put the conflict in the Mideast in a new perspective.
11PM ET
MSNBC INVESTIGATES: THE MAKING OF THE DEATH PILOTS
Mohammed Atta, Ziad Jarrah and Marwan el-Shehhi were young men from respected
families. They were well educated and well off. The future was theirs but on a clear
September morning, they chose death. These men were the suicide pilots of 9/11. Watch
how these seemingly ordinary men become the worst terrorists of our time. This
documentary took us to Germany, Lebanon, and Egypt to piece together the story of
three suicide pilots who crashed planes into the World Trade Center towers and a field
in Pennsylvania. Hosted by Forrest Sawyer.
