I tried going the CUPS route as well, but wasn't successful.

Canon does have an rpm support bundle available:

     http://software.canon-europe.com/software/0029290.asp

I was able to get the ppd file from the rpm, but that relies on the 
linux pstocanonij filter.

I'll try Gutenprint.
