I could never figure it out, but I can say that the same kernel revision *does* work on x86. My "solution" has been to dual-boot, running a separate x86 install for pro audio work. But I can certainly understand how this isn't the ideal workaround.

Rebooting into 2.6.16-gentoo-r2 worked fine.
I may try an earlier kernel if I get a chance later today.
