Colin, Thanks for the feedback. If people on this list think it appropriate then I will report the problem on the LKM. I've worked with Ingo on other AMD64 problems in the past.

I had exactly the same problem with 2.6.16-rt22 on amd64 (it would hang at exactly the same point that you mention). I could never figure it out, but I can say that the same kernel revision *does* work on x86. My "solution" has been to dual-boot, running a separate x86 install for pro audio work.
