hi Richard

the drum scans were via Formatrix, recommended by others on ProDIG, and
whilst one of the least expensive drum scans (at 12GBP each, less for
quantity) I assume that they are of a quality on par with any other -
the comparison with scans on the P4000 was enough to encourage me to
persevere learning how to get the best out it and with confidence that
it could deliver near drum scan quality for archiving, repro, and
printing - I just wish it was a bit easier learning how to tweak the
controls..... ;-}
Dear Geoff

I remember Bob Croxford talking about these people in Cornwall I think. Perhaps best not to resurrect old arguments, especially without knowing in full what the total deal is etc. and a whole lot more besides, and even then I doubt it would be really useful.

Geoff

PS - I remember a while ago you were looking for some Kodachromes to
test-scan - would be interested to see what you get from my 'test'
Kodachrome and compare to my other test files - what will you charge?
It was an interesting exercise leading me to conclude that to fully exploit the potential of a full range well saturated Kodachrome was beyond the FlexTight and by implication, lesser scanners. It was just another 'trigger' that it was time to move to drum scanning and gain the many benefits this technology offers for scanning all film not just Kodachromes.

I am not saying drum scanning is the only way to go, but four plus years of Imacon scanning and scanning film for a number of very fussy (aren't we all!) photographers has convinced me it's the only really seriously professional way to do things. Not a cheap option especially if done as well as possible, but then we don't buy cheap lenses, cheap film or have it budget processed, and we do take great pains to get our lighting and composition right don't we. A great scan is the best basis for good editing, and it can save you large amounts of time in after work and I do don't just mean pixel cloning! And you know what they say, you cannot make a poor picture great....exactly the same applies to a reduced quality scan<BG> I am choosing my words carefully not wishing to upset anyone!

As soon as everything is sorted here with the new drum scanner and Neil Barstow has it profiled to perfection, I will make a brief announcement, until then perhaps anyone interested would contact me off list. Thanks.

Take care

Richard

PS Queries regarding charges etc. is perhaps best done off list. I am more than happy to sent full details to anyone...even competitors!
