On the subject of Mac desktop patterns/pictures.

Even though I use a custom gray desktop picture the full size of my monitor
resolution, this is perhaps not the best approach.

It might be wise to also look into saving the file as plain old 24bit RGB or
perhaps look into 8 or 16 bit RGB (dithered or not) for faster screen
redraw.

The older classic Mac opeating systems sometimes used a 'seamlessly
repeating pattern' which was a 2x2 pixel square of black/white chess board
type alternating pattern. This was then tiled by the OS to fill any size
display and way very quick. You can choose to make the colours black and
darker gray instead of white to make a darker appearing average than
white/black.
