Guy, I agree with the other posts. Some commands can't be directly recorded
but they can be inserted in most cases*. Use the insert menu command option
found in the actions palette options menu flyout, then even though the menus
are probably greyed out...you can still select them and pull down the
command which you are not allowed to record in the usual fashion. You can
also type in the command too while in the insert section.

When I build sharpening actions, I often put in the actual pixels command
before the USM step. If I wanted to automate the view to display at say 50%
and not 1:1 (say for evaluating USM threshold noise issues or dust spotting)
then it would be a case of inserting the actual pixels command, followed by
two zoom out commands (since there is no option to record the 50% view
directly).

Anyway, another alternative to your problem if you don't like the insert
menu command...if there is a step in an existing action that you like - you
can dupe it (drag the step to the new page [not set] icon in the actions
palette) and then drag it out of the original action set folder to the new
action set folder.

So even if you can't figure out how to record an action step that you like
the look of - you should still be able to place that step in another action.
You can also select multiple items (shift) and dupe and drag them to new
locations or dupe or delete them etc. There could/should be a lot more user
friendly features by now, but I guess it could be worse. I would like a full
blown action editor with colour coding and comments and other features as
found with good HTML code editors such as BBedit.

P.S. Some recorded action step names/terms/expressions are found nowhere
else in Photoshop and it can be fun to try to decipher a foreign action that
uses a step that you have never seen expressed in that fashion before.

Methinks it's time to head on over to Ben Willmore's site to see what
obscure tips I have forgotten when it comes to actions...there are lot's of
great little things which are undocumented and less than intuitive when it
comes to building actions.

*P.S. I have $50 cyberbucks on offer to anyone who can record the useless PC
'status bar' window menu option (default on Mac) into an action (and make it
work!) so that I can have single button recall of this important display
when it goes AWOL when the TAB key is used. <g>

Regards,

Stephen Marsh.
