It's a way of making the histogram appear nicer, but it dos NOT improve the
actual file in any way (au contraire). Blurring each channel by the same
amount will give you similar results to just blurring the entire image
overall. It evens out any tonal jumps that may be appearent but at the same
time blurs the image.

And will blurring an image improve it (in general)? Not in my book...
