While trying to send out pics from a clients office, I couldn't get a
connection to the internet via my laptops built in 56k modem. I assumed that
this was being caused by a software or hardware problem at my end, but a
colleague has suggested that built in modems are designed for connection to
analogue telephone lines only, and that they will not work in an environment
where the telephones are run from a central digital switchboard e.g. hotels,
big corporate offices etc. This would match my experience, as whenever this
problem has occurred I can always get a line out by connecting to the fax
machines' point (fax machines operate on analogue lines).
Does anyone know more about this issue? Is there a way round the
problem, or will I always have to find a fax machine?
