I use that setup daily and the only thing I seem to do on a regular basis is kick the flash exposure compensation up or down if my subject is primarily white or black. This is not new to the SB-80/D1X but it seems to be needed a lot. From: Mike Usiskin Hi all, Does anyone use a D1x with the SB80 (I think it is) I'm about to hire one off direct lighting and was wondering whether there was anything specific I should be aware of. I use flash on camera normally so I was wondering about things like white balance etc.
When shooting Martial Arts, I get a lot of all white and black uniforms. Shooting the black, I set the flash to underexpose about -.7 and with white I may bump it to +.2. For normal subject contrast, it seems to do fine without much help from me.
I tend to shoot it on spot metering as well because I have not been happy with the results on Matrix or Center (tends to underexpose, no matter what, in the situations I find myself in most often). It seems the combination of spot and exposure adjustment works well for me but I'm sure others may have a different opinion.
I use the "flash" WB setting and it works well for me in most situations.
This is all assuming you are shooting people or a situation where you'll use TTL. Obviously if you can meter your shot, which I always prefer, than ignore all above. I'm also not sure from your post if you mean to say you will be on camera or off. If off camera, I can't be of much help as I use my monolights or a couple old vivitars for that but I would like to know how the SB-80 performs as a slave unit.
