As far as I understand... but again I refer you to Robin Walker's

An internet router on your network passes requests to your various
machines using NAT - Network Address Translation. The only machine
visible to the 'net is your router. So it's a basic firewall....

More advanced firewall routers include 'something' to detect attacks on
your network from Bad People. Or ways of opening ports to run a web
server etc.

Anyway, you'd have...

Cable Modem --> Router ---> Airport 

Of course an Airport is also a router and does NAT. Confusing huh!
