small cake candles create a nice whisp of smoke after you blow them out, also burning masking tape makes a lot of instant smoke
I use candles in fire places and squirt lighter petrol (art board cleaner) on them for instant roaring flames.....one assistant took it upon himself to remove the small nozzel can lid with pliers, "threw" the petrol on the fire from behind the set and set fire to the carpet leaving model family of five running for cover...always have an extinguisher handy !
