When I got my Fuji S1 a couple of years ago, (use S2 now) I had a big bag
full of ooooold Nikon prime lenses which suddenly became much less useful
because the camera meter would not work with the old non-auto-focus lenses.
So I've been slowly replacing all of my lenses with modern ones and now I
have a system I'm very happy with. I tried some Sigma and Tamron lenses but
found the flare and contrast to be unacceptable so I bit the bullet and
started aquiring Nikon lenses which are better. The two lenses I use
constantly are the 18-35mm and the 24-85mm. These are both great lenses in
my opinion and they both cost just under 600 USD. I also use the 70-300mm a
lot. For some reason, telephoto shots with the S2 seem to be more sharp.
The images from this lens are fantastic. I needed something to get my
wide-angle back... something to approximate a 20mm lens on a 35 body, so I
dug down deep into my pockets and got a 14mm Nikon. What a hunk of glass on
the front of that thing. It's very impressive looking I must say... my
clients gasp when they see it. That was about 1400 US Dollars but it was
well worth it to get a reasonable wide-angle lens (quality is very good)
until the day I finally get a 24x36mm CCD camera body.

I'm at home as I write this so I don't have access to the full descriptions
of those lens models at this time.

Subject: [PRODIG] Lenses for medium 22mm chips
Been trying to get to grips with all the stills lenses available for the
6mpx cameras: S2, D100.

Are there some favourites and workhorses in the 300/$500 price range? If
you wouldn't touch that range with a bargepole, perhaps you have a friend
who does and he/she can give their view?... ;-)
