Hi Y'all.

Being a luddite in the area of e-mail software I had happliy been using
Claris Emailer for many years with no major problems.

OSX has of course forced a change , and in this case not for the better.
Can anybody recommend a mail package that allows me to do my thinking for
myself without automatically presuming and setting such things as file
compression formats, eating my attachments etc.... and, in an ideal world,

Have you thought of using the Mail program that comes with OS X? It is a little slow at times, but does a great job of cataloguing your emails for search retrieval later. The junk mail filter can be trained to junk spam mail. Although the spam b**tards are learning to use image content to deliver text that a spam filter can otherwise detect. But it will at least stop all those emails from Nigeria. And it integrates nicely with the Address book program in OS X to manage your email addresses. If someone sends a business card attachment, double-click to auto add their details. The management of attachments it has to be said, is not that intuitive compared to using something like Claris. At first, it can be a little tricky to know how to extract JPEG image attachments. It is easier if someone is sending you a stuffit file of images though.
