Mike, sounds like it's on topic to me. <g> Sorry for the late response, perils of digest subscription and all that. In addition to the previous posts on this subject... To keep things on topic to your question - yes a Photoshop generated monitor RGB profile or a CMYK printer profile can be used by other ICC software. The whole point of the ICC system is to keep things open and free between apps. Not all profiles can be read by Photoshop, but for the common garden variety profiles that the average Jo would come over there should be no major issues (DLP profiles, CMYKOG colours are a no go in Photoshop, but perhaps not a RIP etc). If generating the profile on a Mac put a .ICM or .ICC extension on the end for any PC users. If generating on the PC for the classic Mac OS, the Mac user will need to add a Mac specific resource fork to the file that tags a little code that tells the OS that the file is a profile and that the owner of the file is ColorSync or Photoshop or whatever. There are many solutions to this issue, including Apple supplied drag n drop or via freeware drag n drop or resource fork editors etc. No filename extension is needed, but it can't hurt either (classic Mac OS). Now to stray off topic... As for the Xpress bashing - Quark has not endeared itself to it's customer base over the years and now that Adobe are offering some competition in layout applications there is a possible alternative for some users (although Adobe are a bigger monopoly than Quark could ever hope to be). It is best not to use CM directly in Xpress, which is why it gains a lot of flak from users who are into CM from Adobe software or in other ICC savvy gear. I am not going to discuss or debate the various pros/cons of using/not using Xpress/InDesign or employing CM or not employing CM in layout software or for final layout output at this time - but having no CM in layout and using Xpress has worked very well for many users for many years and will likely to continue to do so for some time. Just as users adopting ID and it's 'new school' approach will likely work well for other users.
