Rob

I paid 90 for Capture 3.5 from Robert White in Poole and use it on my D1X.
I use it on a 1G Powerbook running OS 10.2.3 with 1G of ram and it seems
pretty quick compared to previous versions of Capture (or is the computer?)
but the design of the software is still a mess. The are 4 separate
components: Nikon View 5.1.4, Nikon View Editor, Nikon Capture Control and
Nikon Capture Editor. Capture isn't too bad (will now write NEFs up to 30MB
in 8 bit) but Nikon View drives me up the bloody wall. When inserting a card
or downloading images you cannot select which images you want on the card -
you can only download all the images on the card. So it's not Nikon 'View'
at all as you can't 'View' what's on the card. If you shoot 50 images,
download them and want to shoot a few more on the same card you have to
download the whole lot again. Why don't Nikon take a look at Image Capture
in OS 10.2.3 and see how it should be done - it's about 5 X faster but won't
do NEFs because Nikon won't release the flippin' code.
If you tether the camera and write NEF files direct to disc you get no
thumbnail icon on the image files so unless you you use Nikon View as a
browser of the files , they are impossible to identify. Nikon UK just
shrugged their shoulders when I pointed this out to them.
I'm just starting to use iView as a browser and to catalogue my stuff and it
seems to work with NEF files pretty well so might use that more than Nikon
View. (Ugh!)
Looks like Nikon have no intention of bringing out a full frame CCD like
Canon, as this new digital 12-24mm DX lens they've bought out seems to
indicate that they are going to stay with the present D-SLR format. Yep, you
guessed it - I've just bought the 17-35mm ED lens! Do we have to buy a whole
new set of lenses now?
Why don't they stick a 11mp Dalsa chip in a D1X - now that would be
something!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Happy Christmas

Geoff
