I have investigated buying a 1Ds from the States, but the prices aren't as
different as one might think.

The best price for a 1Ds that would be available in the next week(s) was
$7750. On top of that would be insurance and freight cost, which could
amount to $250, so say $8000 for the camera. This equates to 4963.

The shop in New York would only take money from a U.S. Credit card, which
would have involved all sorts of tedious bank transfers. Then there are
potential customs delays, etc. etc., not to mention paying a company a few
thousand miles away a pile of money before you have the camera in your
hand. Most importantly, the U.S. Warranty is worthless over here.

The current price in London is 5400, and I think it's worth 400 to have a
year's cover if something goes wrong, not to mention correcting
backfocussing, cleaning the CCD etc.

Also when it comes to selling the camera on, it's presumably better to sell
a U.K camera in the U.K that an imported one.

Talking of which, I will probably be selling my 1D once the 1Ds arrives
(hopefully later this month). I don't yet know what the price will be, but
if anyone's interested, please contact me offlist, and I'll send details
when I have them (connect the elements of this address richard @
