Another idea --- Expand the canvas and select the original image, create
a new layer, move to it, and stroke the selection with a 16px line. Use
the center option. On the line layer apply a splatter filter. I tried
this and it looks pretty close to the old file the carrier trick.

I've found the 'Wave' filter does this well if you don't have too many
generators.
