Here's a trick which can sometimes help with that sort of problem when the computer does a strange thing. Make a note of the exact time when a strange thing happens. Open Sherlock (OS9) or Find (OSX) and find all files modified today. Rearrange them into date modified order. Have a look at what was modified at the time the strange thing happened. If you do this two or three times you can usually isolate the problem.
