Hi David 

I know some of the answers to your questions but not all. However, the best
route, probably, is to initialize the HDD for the Mac as HFS+ using the
Apple disk utility rather than a third party utility. Then, buy MacOpener
for Windows 2000. 

Files are cross platform but applications and volumes aren't. If you format
a drive as NTFS, you will complicate things and will have to buy drivers so
that your applications can see the different partitions. The above route
will solve all your problems.

Macs can usually see PC FAT volumes (because the drivers are inbuilt whereas
on the PC you have to pay extra for the privilege) but I'm not 100% sure if
an NTFS volume can be seen, my guess is it can be seen.
