I used a pocket APS camera for a 2,500 mile cycle ride to Tromso, as it was compact, and I could get it out of my pocket and take a picture without stopping the bike.
Morning list,
I sometimes still carry a coolpix 950 which has 'only' 2.3 mp, it is very easy to print to A4 from this camera and to the non prodig member the A4 image is accepted as a 'normal photo' by friends and family........used for more creative imagery it works fine.throw in some blurr, grain black and white etc and you could easily be using a 35mm with 1600 b/w ...how many put 3200asa in their leicas?
The quality issue will always be chased by the purists, how many catalogue photographers remember the non to distant past where 5x4 was the smallest format accepted.?
Now D1's and S2's can cut it....just
Enlarging a full figure image to 300% in photoshop and being dismayed at 'that hair' being a little pixelated will always happen.......photoshops producers should have set the maximum at 'actual pixels'...didnt you search for the biggest magnifier you could find for your trannnies? Look at the grain on a 5x4.... theres a reason to go dig.
The Imacon I use is stunning in 16 shot capture, but 4 shot is more than adequate for A4, 1 shot capture in print is on the whole indistinguishable, the 16 pop is left for images with 'very fine detail' and impressing the digi non believers.
I had a try out of the iExpress this week...silk nighties, no moire...stunning!. and it just made me think where will it all slow down? limits on film formats were constrained by the problems with large cameras, dark slides and heavy cases etc. Digital backs are getting better at a steady pace, more portable and greater storage.
As David Whyte said Thomas is right
From what I see, all the high end cameras are there.. now , spot retouching for colour is rare nowif your image looks pleasing, who cares what the Macbeth colour checker looks like, unless your task is to shoot a reproduction of this particular target...
yours enjoying the future
(and shooting on film today)
