This is all getting a bit personal and we seem to have put off one contributer which is a pity. The original contribution was 'strongly' put and I have no problem with strong statements (In general though, it is a good idea to check you know exactly what you are talking about if you make categorical utterances). I felt it was also rather rude. I do have a problem with that. In an attempt at levity, I wrote a put down. I find that preferable to venting my feelings to an open list.We are NOT anti-digital fundamentalist. We are just sick of getting digital
images from digital cameras. They are just NOT as good as a good scan. Not
yet! Wait for another year or two. Of course, in depends on the kind of
image you are after. I work for a very high quality magazine, and we are
scanning with a flatbeb Heidelberg F4100. Quality is incredible. We will
only accept incredible quality. And digital cameras are not there yet. We
are not fundamentalists, we've got a eye.
To all of you: STOP buying digital cameras. Just be patience!!
Statements along the lines of 'we know what we are talking about and the rest of the list doesn't' need to be challenged.
I thought my response was measured. If it upset people, I apologise.
'Tirade' is also, I venture 'strongly put'.
In response to your suggestion that I try reading what Bob M wrote, can I respectfully suggest that you re-read what Niko Tom wrote. There is no mention whatsoever about high or low end digital capture. Niko states that no digital cameras can reach the quality of a flatbeb scanner. Now if a flatbeb functions in the same way as a flatbed, I for one respectfully beg to differ.
Now if we all indulge in dissecting each others emails in a he said, she said, style the list will grind to a halt. But equally, if we cannot prick the bubble of each others pomposity occasionally with the odd barbed comment then the list will be the lessor for it (IMHO). I personally look like I have been rolled up in barbed wire under the excellent tutorage of the list and I am a much more informed and better person for the experience.
I tried to write this without reference to individual names, but it proved beyond my skills. I am not trying to personalise this discussion, just clear it up, and apologise if necessary.
Matthew Ward.
