A bit radical writing Richard, and I guess, I would partially agree, but as
long as technology continues to grow and advance, then all current
equipments are prototypes to something better coming in six months. Research
with chips is far from slowing down, and even though you may think that a
new camera with smaller file size may just be a refurbished thing, I don't.

It's been said that the size of the chip's elements to capture light play
a major role in the level of noise in files, ther are physical limitations
to light capture in chips due to the current architecture of those chips,
designed in arrays of "wells" ,responible to "trap" the incoming light, and
I would bet that the newer version of any Canon camera coming to the market
will have LESS noise(chip with bigger wells) than the 1Ds, which is a
fantastic camera, with some annoying noisy things showing here and
there(most probably due to the smaller size of the chip's wells). A new
coming camera WILL be better, not just a refurbished version of an older one
with cheaper price to catch more customers.

And the silence of Nikon must mean something too.

Also, I agree and said it many times, the current technology to handle fast
recording and transfer of data is the limiting factor for larger file sizes
in 35mm DSLR cameras and Kodak 14n is king in terms of slowliness for this
very reason.
Once this tecnical things get solved, we may be buying cameras solely based
on our personal needs of file size and output, and/ or speed , not just what
comes out of the market.

In the meantime, a well "groomed" 6 MP file will work wonders for many
applications without destroying your pocket..
