Dear JorgeDear Richard, the only thing I totally regret from this discussion is my physical inability to be close by and offer my participation in this series of tests you are suggesting. Having all that control over potentially disturbing variables is something I would definitely love to do ,and NOT precisely to be able to say if digital is better or film is much better, but to really be able to find out how far can we go with each format under ideal conditions, and which common ground can be defined (in which range the format's qualities and use overlap). This would be by far the real benefit coming from this information.
I was envisaging a one scan test only actually! I am in ore of the technology that makes digital capture in camera possible, and love seeing the silky smoothness of the resultant channels in the better capture devices.
One of the reasons for going to digital capture that's cited is the greater density range, greater sharpness and lack of cleaning up of the resultant files, better colour and the smoothness of the channels. Regarding the smooth channels, I wonder how much difference this actually makes in the real world though?
I would like to try to demonstrate that good drum scanning can produce files which largely overcome the above. I do agree that it's great not to have to bother with a lab for processing when shooting digitally, but for many this is not a problem as yet!
There are many pro photographers who would like to continue shooting conventionally but without the disadvantages that conventional scanning can and often introduces. They dislike the idea of stepping on the treadmill of high capital costs, high depreciation of digital camera capture devices and high service charges and the additional problems which sometimes appear to crop up from what I read. For them drum scanning may be the answer?
Cheers
Richard
