Just a quick thanks to all who replied to my question. My own searching came across a program that was exactly what I was looking for - rather than trying to adapt an image archiving/database. This software is specifically for dealing with editioned prints/photographs and all number of works that would be sold/exhibited/consigned etc. - and keeping track of all the details.
The photographer went ahead and bought it and after ploughing through the manual and doing some testing, it does work very well. For anyone interested the web site is http://www.artsystems.com/ and the specific package is the Studio package, which is aimed at the artist, as opposed to galleries/museums which the other more complex, and more expensive, versions are aimed at. It is PC only, but will run in Virtual PC on a Mac with no problems. If anyone is tempted to buy, but wants to run any questions buy me before they part with their $900!, feel free to e-mail me.
